How To Encourage And Motivate Your Kids To Practice For Piano Lessons}

Submitted by: Jazz Tan

Parents play an important role on the progress and success of their children in learning how to play the piano or keyboards. Music schools or piano teachers do not use a single cookie cutter to produce future Mozarts from this generation. Each child is unique. Kids have their own learning styles and abilities. As a parent, you know your kids best — what makes them tick, what motivates them to learn, what keeps them interested to pursue piano lessons.

Keep The Dream Alive…Keep Practicing!

Practicing at home for piano lessons or keyboard lessons may have turned into a nightmare for you and your child. Dont give up just yet. There is hope. You and your child could still keep the dream of being able to play beautiful music on the piano alive.

Here are some ways for you to make practice sessions fun, exciting and effective experience for your child:

1. Importance of Piano Practice.

Practice makes perfect may sound like an overused clich. Yet there is no other way. Practicing makes one perform better. Make your child understand that success doesnt come overnight, or from the fairy godmother for that matter. Cite examples that he/she can relate to a cartoon character or his/her favorite bedtime story . Make use of examples using his favorite toy or movie. Connect it with the idea of the value of practicing piano.

2. Choose Your Words.

? Speak with kind words and in a gentle tone. Raising the tone of your voice and threatening your child would draw him/her further away. Your child would tend to associate practice with fear. Or you may use lively words with an energetic tone. If your child feels your enthusiasm, he/she may likely feel the same.

? Praising them for their efforts, rather than results give your child more confidence. This would make them feel appreciated rather than pressured.

3. Fun and Fave Piano Pieces.

Children would love playing music that they truly enjoy. Talk to his/her teacher to give your child a piano piece that is a familiar tune or something he/she could sing-along to. It could be a nursery rhyme, a movie or TV theme, or maybe a pop song they hear on the radio or watch on TV.

4. Showcase Their Progress

You dont have to wait for the big school recital to make your child feel that you are proud of his/her progress. Hold a family mini-concert or video-tape a performance to be sent to grandma and grandpa. That sense of pride you show towards your childs efforts could boost his/her confidence and encourage him/her to practice some more.

Once you enroll your child in piano lessons, you also signed-up to be part of his/her journey. However, parents are in charge of maintenance checks to keep the engine in tip-top condition. Parents need to guide kids towards having the right attitude and developing proper habits, especially during practice sessions. Its important to keep your child motivated and disciplined. But do it with lots of love and affection.
